Sony D-NE511 Silver ATRAC/MP3 CD Walkman
Editorial
Amazon.co.uk Review
Create and play CD-Rs containing up to 30 CDs with Sony's new D-NE511 ATRAC/MP3 CD Walkman. The Sony D-NE511 looks like any other CD player; there are numerous buttons on the front, a two-line LCD screen and the usual d-pad for playing, skipping and stopping the tracks. Although in reality this is far from the truth as the CD player has the ability to play both standard audio CDs and specifically burned CDR/RWs. Using Sony's proprietary PC software, SonicStage Simple Burner and a CD writer on your PC, tracks can be burned on a CD-R/RW using either Sony's ATRAC3plus or ATRAC3 formats. Taking either CD or MP3 files, tracks can be compressed by up to 1/20th of there original size depending on the quality setting you chose. Music can be burned and compressed to 132, 105, 66, 64 or 48 kbps (kilobits per second) and compressing at 48 kbps, will allow you to record up to 490 songs (about 30 CDs) on a single 700 MB disc. Track information is provided via an Internet connection to Gracenote CDDB before burning and this information will then appear on the LCD display when you play the track.
Sound obviously varies according to the level at which you record it. CD-quality MP3s are normally recorded at 128 kbps and at this ratio you are still able to get some 170/180 tracks per CD--slightly more than the 13 or 14 you normally find. The unit is powered by two "AA" type batteries and will run for around 50 hours. And for the fashion-coconscious the player comes in three different colours: blue, red and silver.
While the device's reliance on Sony will be annoying to some, it doesn't take away the fact that you've got a great music player that produces very good music for a very affordable price. --Jason Denwood

Amazing delivery speedReview date: 2008-10-05 Rating: 8 out of 10I was absolutely amazed when the item was delivered on the following day fist class recorded having ordered it on 3rd October and was told to expect it on the 13th, well done Niche and Royal Mail!
The player is easy to use but the display is on the small side and requires good light to view. The buttons are OK but the multiple function fast forward, stop, pause/play and reverse all on one button are not as convenient as single function buttons. This player replaced a Goodmans player that failed only after about 18 months, but the buttons on this were much more user friendly.CD PlayerReview date: 2008-08-09 Rating: 10 out of 10The CD Player arrived to day and works. My old CD Player broke so it was time to get a new one. The CD player even has power plug so you can plug it into the wall instead of using batteries.
I give the CD Player 5 Stars!Sound quality superb.Review date: 2008-08-07 Rating: 10 out of 10This cd player is faultless and I am glad I ignored the negative
reviews of volume, because this is loud enough on 1/3 to 1/2
volume using earphones.
I use these in-ear Creative Labs EP-630/A Earphones ASIN: B0009G6FQI.
which work superbly.
The headphone output on European models is 1.5 x 1.5 mW.
The frequency response is 20 - 20,000 Hz, which I believe
covers the complete human hearing range.
Those that complain must be using the wrong headphones,
or just prefer listening to extremely loud music.
My choice was between an Ipod or the Sony D-NE511 Walkman,
and I chose the Sony Walkman because:
My top criteria was to have the best sound quality...
..Sony Walkman wins, hands down.
You can play your original CDs and you can also play MP3s
recorded onto disc. I have just stuck with playing my originals.
Second was to have portability, without the soundtrack skipping...
...Obviously Ipod comes out top here, but my solution was to
purchase this cd player sports belt ASIN: B00005T39R.
It fits this Walkman perfectly.
The CD player is also jog proof, It has two settings, even on the
first setting it does not skip.
Included in the box is a mains adapter.
Or you can use dry batteries (two AAs) which are not included.
One niggle is that you cannot use rechargeable ones.
This item has been available since 1 Jan 2003, and a newer
version was brought out (Sony D-NE711) but is no longer available.
All in all this is a brilliant CD player that I highly recommend.
Sony cd walkman - very goodReview date: 2008-06-23 Rating: 10 out of 10I bought this cd player recently and I'm very pleased with it. The sound quality is good and it's easy to use. The only annoying thing I've come across so far is the bleeping every time you press a button, but there are instructions in the manual so you can disable that function. There have been a few criticisms in these reviews of the volume on this model, that it's restrictive and can't be turned loud enough. I've tried playing many different styles of music on my player (including classical), not particularly quietly, without even reaching the halfway mark on the volume control. I don't think it's any different to any of the other models I've owned in that respect, and I certainly don't find that it's a problem or spoils my enjoyment of the music. Perhaps it's a fault with a few individual players. Otherwise, the only reason it would be a problem is if you're hard of hearing or intent on becoming so. ;-)
