PROBLEM WITH CD COMPARTMENT Review date: 2009-02-08 Rating: 2 out of 10
Philips MCM398D/05 Micro Hi-Fi System with iPod dock
It pretty much does as has been described in the product information section except that I received mine on a Thursday and after a total of about 2 hours playing time, the CD compartment stopped working the following Sunday (only 2 days later). The display message read 'NO DISC'. I restarted the system to no avail and all other efforts to get it working again proved futile. I have now returned the system again and do not want another one.

Reviewsgreat hifi system but...Review date: 2009-02-07 Rating: 8 out of 10the philips hifi system is a great one, you will really love its 100W powerfull and deep sound but... its lcd display doesn`t looks as good on photos on the web -its more green and like by the older onces but that`s the only little dissapointment I`ve had with this system- there is a lovely blue light when turning on the volume wheel and plugging a mp3 player, the radio is also very good, RDS on board, ipod compatibile (even my daughter`s ipod touch)I felt very unhappy to give it back to my daughter after a few days of trying it in the kitchen ;)This Hifi.Review date: 2008-12-24 Rating: 10 out of 10After buying for christmas ive got to say thank you amazon and city link for delvering my hifi in time for christmas with super saver delivery. i was e xpecting it to come on the 27th but it came on the 23rd, awesome.
after setting up hifi, plugged it in, tried some cds, simply amazing sound quality. shame that u cant control the amount of treble and bass though, instead u get presets and bass boost, but the presets are good, so im not all that bothered.
the speakers are completely wooden, nicely designed, wicked tweeters, just again.. awesome. shame there isnt any DAB, and shame u dont get a aux slot at the back of the system, since i have line in to connect to permantly (to my computer) im a little dissapointed cos that means the cable have to stay at the front.
the hifi itself looks awesome, volume knob lights up blue when u adjust volume, and it gradually turns off w hen u leave it alone - classy.
fm radio - it picked up all my stations automatically with the (im sorry) the stupid piece of wire :P so i guess i have good reception.
so:
good poitns -
amazing sound quality
looks awesome
amazingly designed speakers
nice range of features
bad points-
no aux at the back
no manual control of sound (im not all that bothered though, presets are good)
sorry but i written this in a jhurry, so excuse my grammer and my typos
Crisp, Bassy & FitReview date: 2008-08-20 Rating: 8 out of 10I am moving out next week and decided that i needed to upgrade some of my equipment. Laptop, TV, Stereo, the usual stuff.
for 5 years now I have been using a 5.1 Asda own brand home cinema system that cost £35. It only had 4W speakers and a 15W sub.
I spent ages trying to find something i liked. I didn't want a cassette deck and PC speakers can't get the clarity of sound.
I eventually stumbled across this gem and ordered it.
on arrival this morning I whipped it out straight away and started trying it out.
CD player - very good play back of a home made CD, awesome sound clarity good levels of treble and bass, no skipping and easy to use.
Radio - Really clear signal even with the whispy little wire arial phillips provide! which is quite impressive as i can't get mobile phone signal in parts of my room. Philips! if you can afford to throw in 8 different I-Pod adapters you can throw in a decent arial! RDS is really good, search function missed Kiss 100 (some of you may think that is a good thing)
USB - some of you have complained about difficulty, I formated my memory stick using FAT (stick your memory stick in your computer go to "my computer" right click on the drive and select "format"). Had a little hicup whilst it auto installed the driver for it but it is playing perfect! In fact, the sound is ever so slightly better than the CD-R! really easy and really useful as i keep all my music on a USB hard drive.
Speakers - really clear, crisp and bassy. Some people have complained that they have too much bass. Yes, they are very Bass happy but switch your EQ to JAZZ and it is a lot better. Personally, I think music has to have bass so i love them. Small, tidy and discrete (if ya keep the covers on them!) but look extremely cool with the covers off (esp when you can see the subwoofers vibrate). Oh dear philips! Could have given us a bit of a longer speaker cable! I'm replacing the cables with high quality cable later this month so it doesn't matter to me too much, but they are hard wired in so potential buyers be prepared for some soldering or using terminal blocks. Connectors on the back aren't the most robust but pretty standard.
AUX - useful on the front but I don't want a cable permenantly plugged defacing the unit. would be better on the back, though I am pretty sure you can use the I-Pod mini jack socket for it. which would mean you have 2 AUX sockets! BUYERS NOTE - you need a Mini Jack to Mini Jack cable for this unit not a jack to phono! No Cable is included (take note philips!)
REMOTE - pretty well designed, easy to use, nice buttons and it works from a variety of angles! Good job Philips!
I-Pod Dock - I don't actually own an I-Pod and don't plan on buying one (Sonys are far superior) so I have not tested it. But, it is a very impressive accessory. 8 I-Pod adapters! That means basically every I-Pod made since 2005 will work with this system. the unit charges and changes the track on your I-Pod. very impressive. Also looks good and matches the system design. not just a lobbed in the box gimmic.
OVERALL - Great value, esp if you get it from the German suppliers for £65 on the Market place! all features are easy to use and well designed. Unit looks and sounds great with no distortion at highest level. You will find that you listen to it much quieter than other systems because you don't need to listen over distortion.
However, Longer speakers cables are a must as these are only 1 metre long. A decent arial would be desirable as would a Phono Aux on the rear for connecting a turn table (though you can get a female-female phono adapter and then connect a phono to mini jack if need be)
would be 5 stars, but let down by those speaker cables and the arial.
HIGHLY RECCOMENDEDpromises more than it deliversReview date: 2008-08-02 Rating: 4 out of 10I was disapointed with this system. The radio antenna is a piece of wire and reception for me was so poor that it was unlistenable. I think that a directioal antenna that could be adjusted would have solved this. Then I found that the remote was very insensitive - not much good to me as I was trying to use a 'teach yourself' CD that needed to be stopped and started.
The CD reproduction was good.
I cannot comment on any other features - after the frustration with the radio and the remote I sent it back.
